Some caregivers do not need a license, including informal parent cooperatives, and family, friends and neighbors who provide occasional care. DCYF adopts rules to set licensing requirements when directed by state law to set specific requirements to help clarify more general laws or help organize requirements that may be set by both state and federal laws.
The Child Care Licensing Program strives to provide preventive, protective, and quality services to children in care by ensuring that licensed facilities meet established health and safety standards through monitoring facilities, providing technical assistance, and establishing partnerships with providers, parents, and the child care community.
All children and families, regardless of age, ethnicity, cultural background, gender, socioeconomic status, or ability, are afforded the same protections under law and regulations for child care facilities. Licensing Staff inspect centers annually. Health and fire officials visit once a year. Two adults provide care for children, with a limit of six under the age of 2.
Group homes must be registered. Most states include records of child care licensing inspections in the search results for each provider. States without records available on the web can give you this information over the phone or at the agency office. Most states allow some child care providers to be exempt from child care licensing laws.
